Air Conditioning - No longer a luxury

The value of air conditioning in your home will never be more apparent than when it is over 30°C and you can't sleep at night

We often view air conditioning in our homes as a luxury item but how many of us have it in our vehicle though and don’t give it a second thought? In the summer when it is hot out people will flock to the pools, buy all the fans they can find at local box stores, go out for dinner to avoid turning the oven on, and seek refuge from the heat by sleeping in the basement in attempt to get a decent nights sleep. The cost of installing central air conditioning is quickly outweighed by the comfort of living comfortably in your own home.

If you choose to upgrade your home with an air conditioner, here is some information you might find useful:

How an Air Conditioner Works

An air conditioner seems as if it cools your homes’ air, but it actually makes your home less warm by removing heat from the indoor air and transferring that heat to the outdoors. Heat is extracted from the home by passing indoor air across a refrigerant coil that is typically placed above the furnace. Refrigerant lines then carry the heat to the outdoor unit, where it is released into the outside air. The cooling cycle continues until the indoor temperature reaches the thermostat setting.

Air Conditioner Quality

Ideally, an air conditioner should keep you comfortable for the lowest monthly energy cost. Air conditioners have a SEER rating (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) that gives you a value of the efficiency of your cooling equipment. The higher the SEER rating, the less your unit will cost to operate.

Another important thing to consider when picking an air conditioner is the decibel rating of the condenser (outdoor unit). The lower the decibel rating, the quieter the unit and the happier your neighbor may be. If your condenser has to be placed on the side of your house by your neighbor’s bedroom window or beside your deck, you may want to get a quieter unit.

Air Conditioner Maintenance

Maintenance on your air conditioner will consist of a few important items. The most important thing to do is change your furnace (or air handler) filter regularly. Keeping your filter clean will help to keep dust and dirt from clogging your cooling coil and will ensure good air flow with the fan. Washing off the condenser with a garden hose (not recommended while it is running unless you need a shower!) will also keep it working to its potential. Make sure that your floor registers and return air wall grilles are not restricted by furniture as well. It is still recommended to have a scheduled maintenance on your air conditioning system every 3 to 5 years to check your unit’s refrigerant levels and to have the refrigerant coil cleaned.

Air Conditioner Tips

An air conditioner works best when it operates periodically throughout the day to keep your homes temperature down to a desired temperature. Keeping your blinds or curtains closed during the day helps to eliminate the amount of solar gain and will help keep the amount of hours down that your air conditioner will have to operate.

A good temperature to have your thermostat at would be around 22 degrees Celsius.. Having your house too cool is unnecessary and will often lead to colds as your body shouldn’t be exposed to huge temperature changes that one may experience from going indoors to outdoors several times.

Air conditioning is a great addition to your home and will increase the level of comfort that you will feel. After a long days work, you shouldn’t have to worry about whether or not you will be able to get a good night’s sleep. Think of it as an investment in keeping your family happy, it’s the least you can do for your wife. A happy wife (or husband), a happy life!
